Le présent document présente un protocole de prélèvement des macro-invertébrés dans les cours d'eau peu profonds, dont la totalité des substrats devant être échantillonnée dans le lit mouillé peut l'être à pied ou au moyen d'embarcations, avec des appareils à main de type filet Surber ou haveneau. Le principe est de réaliser 12 échantillons élémentaires, répartis dans trois groupes (appelés phases) de substrats dominants ou marginaux. Développé pour un usage en France métropolitaine, le protocole est applicable également sur tout territoire présentant les mêmes types de cours d'eau.
